X Factor star spurns Simon

Mali Michael McCalla

Sticking two fingers up and blowing a raspberry at Simon Cowell isn’t generally thought to be the best way of getting ahead in the music business, but that’s pretty much what 16-year-old former X Factor crooner Mali Michael McCalla did last week.

Fans of the annual TV talent show may well remember young Mali from last year’s show, when he wowed the judges but didn’t make it through to boot camp because he was a year too young. Reality TV bosses had been hopeful he would come back and put in an appearance in this year’s contest.

Actually, Mali did pop along to the auditions in London last week, although that was to support his dad Noel, who’s hopeful of getting a stab at superstardom in the over 25’s category.

A clearly smitten Simon Cowell stopped short of dropping down on his hands and knees and begging him to come back, but he’s clearly a little peeved Mali doesn’t see his future lying with his Syco label.

The talented 16-year-old has turned down the chance to be the new Leon Jackson because he’s on the brink of signing a £1m deal with US boyband NSA. "It's the real deal,” said a pal. “He doesn't want to be associated with reality shows any more."

Hmmm… we’d imagine Mali’s scenes with Simon won’t make the final cut when the show airs in August then.
